ISI CAS at World Refrigeration Day 2025: Cooling as Key Infrastructure for the Future
Paris, June 18, 2025 – The International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR) organized a high-profile event in Paris to mark World Refrigeration Day. The theme of the event was “The Critical Roles of Cooling and Heat Pump Solutions for Human Well-being, Animal Health, and Climate Sustainability.”
More than 170 representatives from governments, industry, scientific institutions, and international organizations from 60 countries attended the event. The main goal was to highlight the crucial importance of cooling as strategic infrastructure for food security, healthcare, energy efficiency, and climate resilience.
Participation of the Institute of Scientific Instruments of the CAS (ISI CAS)
The event was actively attended by Ing. Aleš Srnka, CSc., head of the Cryogenics and Superconductivity Group at the Institute of Scientific Instruments of the Czech Academy of Sciences (IPM CAS), who also serves as President of Section A (Cryogenics and Liquefied Gases) within the IIR. He spoke during the scientific panel, emphasizing the importance of cryogenic technologies in particle physics, space research, new energy sources, and the development of low-carbon solutions.
“Cryogenics is an energy-intensive field, but science has the potential to find viable and low-carbon applications. It is essential for science, industry, and policy to collaborate on developing sustainable solutions,” said A. Srnka.
Challenges and Recommendations from the Meeting
During the event, the IIR called on all countries to:
- Recognize cooling as key infrastructure,
- Establish national cooling panels to coordinate cross-sectoral collaboration,
- Support research and innovation in energy-efficient and environmentally friendly technologies,
- Integrate cooling into national climate and development strategies.
There was also a call for international cooperation, data sharing, and investment in education and capacity building in the field of cooling, especially in developing countries.
New Initiative: Global Refrigeration Outlook
A new flagship project by the IIR – the Global Refrigeration Outlook – was introduced during the event. It will provide an overview of global trends, innovation gaps, and policy recommendations in the field of refrigeration every four years. The first edition is planned for 2027.
